On October 29, 2005, Berta Gill was a resident at the Grand Court Lakes ALF in North Miami Beach, Florida. At that time, she was an elderlywoman suffering from Alzheimer’s/Dementia. At the time of heradmission, it was represented to her family members that she would be placed in a secure living environment. The facility was aware of her dementia and confusion and her tendency to wander.
Only a few days following Hurricane Wilma, the facility left their gates open for repairmen to fix Hurricane damage. Ms. Gill wandered through the open gate and was allowed to exit the property even though staff members saw her leaving. The staff did not inquire as to whether it was safe for her to leave unescorted. Ms. Gil, an insulin dependent diabetic was missing for two days and was eventually found near someabandoned railroad tracks. She was taken to Parkway hospital fortreatment of insect bites and diabetic coma. Ms. Gill was able to survive her ordeal and was moved to a different facility.
