On October 12, 1998, Jason Campbell, a 20 year old boy, was involved in a motor vehicle accident. He was taken to North Broward Medical Center by ambulance for treatment for the injuries he received. In the emergency room X-rays showed that Jason had a tear of his aorta and needed open heart surgery. There was a question in the films as to whether or not the location of the tear would require the doctors to use a heart-lung bypass machine to perform the surgery.
North Broward Medical Center does not have a bypass machine and the use of one would require a transfer to Broward General Medical Center. The treating surgeon decided to proceed at North Broward Medical Center. Unfortunately complications arose during the middle of the surgery for which a heart-lung machine was required. Since one was not available, the surgery was prolonged and went on for more than 12 hours. As a result of these complications Jason died following the surgery. He was survived by his parents and sister.
