After filing a lawsuit, a $1.35 million dollar settlement was obtained for the family of a Fort Lauderdale woman who died during childbirth. Laura Sanchez was a 43 year old woman who was admitted to a local hospital to deliver her baby. Following a c-section, a post-partum hemorrhage developed and Mrs. Sanchez lost a massive amount of blood. The hospital was not able to timely deliver blood products to the Labor and Delivery Room to perform transfusions and the treating physicians did not perform a timely hysterectomy which would have stopped the bleeding. As a result, Mrs. Sanchez bled to death in the operating room and never regained conscious following the delivery of her baby.
The family was told by the doctors in the hospital that Mrs. Martinez had died from a blood clot in her lungs and did not reveal the truth cause of death. Fenster and Cohen was able to establish that Mrs. Martinez died from neglect and mistreatment of an ongoing hemorrhage which resulted in a significant settlement to the family.
